We have been informed by the flour millers association, that due to a higher risk of ZON levels breaching statutory requirements that ZON ( Zearalenone) testing will be required on all milling wheat deliveries to millers from 1st November 2017 for the foreseeable future.
As with previous years where ZON was more of an issue, the main concern lies with milling co-products such as bran as well as those mills producing a higher percentage of wholemeal flour. In 2012, when similar ZON levels were seen, there was a need for breakfast manufacturers to seek a derogation from the Commission to avoid products being over the legal limit.
It is the growers responsibility to ensure that all deliveries of milling wheats (Grp1, Grp2, Low grades, soft, hard and all other wheat destined for human consumption) have an official Zon result on the passport. Any costs associated with re delivery or rejection because the Zon (and DON) results are not on the passport will be borne by the grower.
The cost of these tests at Fengrain will be £30 plus vat for non-members and £25 plus vat for members, they will be invoiced separately.
Fengrain lab is geared up to do these tests and for grain that has already been farm sampled they will be done (and charged) for contracts already in the system for November UNLESS you notify us that you already have a test result.
Should we need fresh samples of your grain they will need to come from each separate heap or location and would ask that you provide them.
We will need the following information on the bag:
Customer Code / Variety / Grade / Storage Location / Approx tonnage in that location.
You can deliver your samples in person to Fengrain or send them to FTAO The Laboratory, Fengrain Ltd, Hook Lane, Wimblington, March Cambs. PE15 0QN we can arrange collection. Please contact the office or your buyer to arrange collection from your farm.
