Storage facilities

The central store at Wimblington has grown steadily since 1974 and now handles, dries and conditions 80,000 tonnes of combinable crops annually. The complex has five flat stores, accounting for half the tonnage, together with 40 silos varying in capacity from 500 to 4,500 tonnes. This allows a high level of quality and varietal segregation, which enables wheat to be stored in 15 grades.

The site has been designed to intake at harvest upto 5,000 tonnes per day so as to offer a fast and efficient service to growers during this busy period. The site can take delivery through pre arranged vehicles or members own transport, with the ability for grain to be graded and stored on a load by load basis. The complex has 8 tipping points, a sophisticated sampling system and two weigh bridges so as to optimise turn round time.

Drying is carried out at cost for storage members and Fengrain operates a policy of subsidised haulage into store so members sited further from the store, are not disadvantaged. Members have the flexibility to store whatever amount they require, some store all their crop at the central store whilst others use it to compliment their own on farm storage.

Development of the store has been assisted by grant aid, both EU and Government, and together with economies of scale results in a cost effective grain storage solution for growers.

The facility also benefits our customers who can depend on continuity of supply right up to the new harvest from quality storage registered under the Trade Assured Scheme for Combinable Crops (T.A.S.C.C.)
