AIC Member Briefing                            Mycotoxin – Update on Testing Requirements for Harvest 2012 Crop

At an industry meeting today, nabim reported on the position of its members in continuing to require a DON mycotoxin test result for all deliveries to all mills. This is as a reaction to the elevated DON levels seen this harvest in both AIC and nabim rapid results with some 5,500 results having been generated by respective members.

The situation will be reviewed again in December.

AIC and NFU did question the decision to adopt a blanket approach to testing when analysis of the results showed certain geographic areas presenting many of the higher results. Whilst some regional millers may decide to adopt such an approach the view from more national companies was that managing two different systems was not possible for intakes and that the figures suggested this could not be done in a way which would meet their due diligence requirements.

Data from nabim suggests that whilst there has been a good correlation between test results taken at intake and those provided from within the trade (ie. on the passport), there has been a poor correlation between test results and risk analysis. This lack of correlation was also noted by breakfast cereal manufacturers who indicated they would also continue to require testing for their lower intake level needs.

Results for barley and oats, as well as results for ZON, indicated generally low levels and no additional requirements for testing.
